Online abuse and cyber crime bill introduced by Plaid Cymru MP Liz Saville Roberts

Our thanks to Jeff for this, a short piece from BBC Wales. The start of the article:

A bill to tackle online abuse and cyber crime is being introduced by Plaid Cymru MP Liz Saville Roberts. It aims to make it an offence to post content that is discriminatory, threatening and causes distress.

Internet service providers and social media firms would be forced to remove offensive material. The 10-minute rule bill being presented on Wednesday would need UK government support but has already secured cross-party backing.

So if anti-feminist content causes (manufactured) ‘distress’ among feminists, ISPs and social media firms would be forced to remove that content, and those who post such content would be committing an offence. No wonder the bill has already secured cross-party backing.

In 2014 I launched The Alternative Sexism Project, aiming to raise public understanding that the sexism faced by men and boys has far more grievous consequences than the sexism faced by women and girls.

  1. William Gruff says:

‘Causes distress’ is the most frightening aspect of that little monster.

  2. epistemol says:

Mr. Gruff is right. This bill IS a monster, covering as it does the appeal to distress in particular.
It amounts to total censorship of anything anyone else SAYS they don’t like, turning us all back into spiteful children complaining that little Johnny said a rude word, but with the force of law.
It will end up being unworkable eventually and have to be abandoned, having caused a lot of damage on the way.
Is Saville Roberts a vindictive trouble maker, or just stupid?
